A guitar riff is short line of music which is often repeated and stands out from the other parts of the song. These are the parts of the songs which are widely recognized. A killer guitar riff with catchy lyrics is the usual mixture of any popular guitar song. One can also look at them as decorative elements that add a charisma to the song. When talking about great guitar riffs, there are a lot of them that come to mind. But only a few can be classified as absolutely mind blowing.
Get ready for some of the greatest riffs ever. These will tingle and entertain you, leaving you with an overwhelming sense of awe. It will not be your fault at all if you are not able to get them out of your head.
Thunderstruck – This insanely popular single by AC/DC portrays Angus Young’s tearing guitar apart with lightning speed. This song will definitely get you up and jumping on your feet leaving your absolutely thunderstruck.
Misirlou – I don’t think many would recognize the song with its original name. But I am ready to bet you a hundred bucks that you have listened to it several times and relished in its glory. Okay, no more suspense. The really old Greek song’s surf rock cover version by Dick Dale is what I am talking about. For those who haven’t still connected, it has been used as the soundtrack for Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and also in the song ‘Pump it’.
Layla – Can one spoil oneself with music? The answer, of course, is a resounding yes. The masterpiece by Derek and the Dominos stands tall to this day and continues to appease the listeners. With meanings hidden deep in love and infidelity, the tortured riff of the song was written by Duane Allman. Well, now, you can go spoil yourself.
Walk this way – This song by Aerosmith, has been adored as the signature style of the band. Starting slow and with drums in the background, the song picks up pace with Joe Perry doing what he does best. The song is like a hit of the hardest drugs. The adrenaline rush just cannot be described. It is on my playlist, always.
Johnny B. Goode – The.Best.Guitar.Song.Ever. Well, it is not just my opinion; the folks at the Rolling stone magazine think so too. The song is so awesome that it has been covered by over a hundred other artists from The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix to Partibrejkers (some little known German band, I think).
This list is in no way a complete one. Well, it is not even close to one. Here are a few more honorable mentions.
Heartbreaker – Led Zeppelin
(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction – Rolling Stones
Soothsayer – Buckethead
Phantom of the Opera – Iron Maiden
ScuttlinButtlin – Stevie Ray Vaughan (If you ever managed to play this the way Stevie did, you should consider yourself gifted)
Don’t Fear the reaper – Blue Oyster Cult
